The collection deals with two provenance questions concerning writings of George Bernard Shaw. In 1946 Eaton received four letters from solicitor Ivo L. Currall representing Bernard Shaw about the source of seventeen items of Shaw's in Eaton's catalog no. 3, and one letter from W.R. Smyth correcting genealogical information on Shaw's parents. The second controversy is about the authenticity of twenty love poems supposedly written by George Bernard Shaw for Ellen Terry. Eaton writes to Pam Darlaston of the publishing house David & Charles, 16 Oct. 1979 (typed, retained carbon copy) about the sale of eighteen of the poems through Sotheby & Co., he believes they are authentic, and he has two additional poems. These two manuscript poems, first lines beginning, "Speed, gentle Wind, to where She lies," and "The sun that filled the world with light" are enclosed in a slipcase with Peter Eaton's bookplate, as are typed copies of the eighteen published poems, with a note from Eaton on their provenance. Also includes the published book edited by Jack Werner, Lady, wilt thou love me? eighteen love poems for Ellen Terry attributed to George Bernard Shaw (London: David & Charles, 1980), and two photocopied newspaper clippings about the sale and questions of authenticity. Also, includes Eaton's heavily corrected 9-page (plus inserts) typescript draft, "Shaviana," detailing how he acquired Shaw materials, a one-page incomplete carbon typescript, "Shaviana," a two-page carbon typescript description of the Shaw collection Eaton was selling, and two photocopies of printed poems (one in Greek) annotated, presumably in Shaw's hand.
